Beavers kick off season

November 15, 2009, 10:28am

Oregon State kicked off the 2008-2009 season over the weekend in Ashland, Oregon at the SOU Open. They got off to a good start, in a tournament that featured a lot of smaller schools. Nonetheless, it was a good beginning for a team that appears slated to start the season with a lot of new faces in their lineup. Jason Lara, Kelly Kubec, Michael Mangrum, and RJ Pena got things rolling and the upper weights followed.  Freshman Mangrum was named the  tourney's Outstanding Wrestler. Kubec had six pins in six matches and Pena had five.  Keegan Davis won the 157 lb. class in his first competition at that weight in 3 years. Ryan Smith and Colby Covington showed why they were good pickups for the OSU program, winning titles at 165 and 174.  Brice Arand edged teammate Ty Vinson in the finals at 184, while Chad Hanke was the winner at 197.  Clayton Jack won five matches on his way to 2nd place.
