Hargobind Results...more updates

November 7, 2009, 5:01pm

A lot going on up here, trying to keep folks updated as best we can.

Weight class of the tournament- 66kg

This weight class is loaded. Haislan Garcia of Canada,  Sunkist champ Nate Gallick (up a weight), Joe Johnston, 2x NCAA Champ Teyon Ware, NCAA finalist Josh Churella, South African Olympian Heinrich Barnes, Todd Meneely. It looks like Joe Johnston is getting a default for 5th over Josh Churella.

Ware is in the finals, after a close fought win over Churella in the semis.  Meneely will wrestle Heinrich Barnes for  3rd place at 66kg. Barnes pinned Nate Gallick in an earlier wrestleback  round, and just beat Josh Churella in 3 periods.

55kg-John Pineda of Canada is in the finals, he will take on Sam Hazewinkle.  Paul Donahoe is going for 3rd.

Ben Askren is in the finals at 74 kg.  He won a wild 3 period match over opponent from India in the semis.  Some very good scrambles in this one. Down in the first period 5 ponts or so.  Got on top and pulled it out.  Lost the 2nd period, then won the third to take the bout. Was down in 3rd period as well, once again got on top and got some turns.  He will wrestle Matt Gentry, former NCAA Champ from Stanford, who is representing Canada in International competition.

Travis Paulson is wrestling at 84 kg up here, he is finals vs. Canadian world team member.

Steve Mocco is in the finals at HWT

Wrestling training facility in the works for Tulare

October 2, 2009, 1:58pm

100,000-square-foot sports complex will be built near outlets

By Victor Garcia • vdgarcia@visalia.gannett.com • September 28, 2009

TULARE — The organization that oversees amateur wrestling in the United States has chosen Tulare as the site of a 100,000-square-foot training facility.

California USA Wrestling plans to build a sports complex and dorm near Preferred Outlets at Tulare. Construction is scheduled to be complete in early 2012.

Each state has its own branch of USA Wrestling. The California organization has been renting space at different locations, which organizers believe is a less-than-ideal way to train the country's amateur wrestlers.

"If you are an Olympic wrestler," said Darrel Pyle, Tulare city manager, "you are so because of USA Wrestling."

Representatives of California USA Wrestling were in Tulare two months ago and in mid-September to get a feel for the city, Pyle said.

"They were very much impressed with the fact that Tulare is building like crazy," he said. "And there's not a lot of building going on throughout the state."

The training complex would be visible from Highway 99.

"We showed them they can see hotels, the outlet mall, the movie theater, all the things they need," Pyle said.

Pyle added that the facility will bring tourism to Tulare.

"A tournament could have 10,000 family members show up for a couple thousand wrestlers," he said.

The facility would also be used for other indoor-sport tournaments, such as volleyball and fencing, he said. The city also has spoken with College of the Sequoias about using the facility to reinstate its wrestling program.

COS officials could not be reached for comment over the weekend, but in President Bill Scroggins' report to his board of trustees, he said the sport is being considered for revival at the college.

Pyle said local developer Greg Nunley's Great Valley Land Company will construct the facility and donate a portion of the land involved.

"Now that [California USA Wrestling's] board has agreed that this is the place, they've got a lot of work to do," Pyle said.
